Watercolour Paintings
This page is a Gallery of my Watercolour Artworks. Alongside each picture is a short description of the media used, the size of the work, and the scene, and location that I am trying to depict. Most of my Watercolour's have been rendered by working from reference photographs which I have sourced from visiting the locations. These are by no means the complete collection of my works, but just a selection which I have found to be popular with my friends and family on social media sites.
" Sunset on Grainger Street "
This is a more recent work that I completed in 2015. It depicts the view down Grainger Street in Newcastle City Centre. I worked from a photograph that I had taken a few years ago, I was visiting Newcastle Upon Tyne on elate afternoon, and I kjust knew I had to try and replicate the sun going down at the end of the street. it was late Summer afternoon, most shoppers were busiying themselves to go home and the streets were clearing, I was mesmerised by the long shadows and the colour of the sky as the sun lowered in the distance.
This is an A3 Watercolour ( approx 16" x 12" ) painted on W&N Artists 300gsm paper, and using Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith Water Colours.
" Carole's Butterfly "
Thbis was a favourite of mine which I completed in 2014. This was in fact a comission piece that I produced for an old School Friend who I was lucky to find again on Facebook a few years ago, and as such that is represented in the name of this artwork. I worked on this image, and used a photograph for reference which was supplied by Phil W. Cork. who captured the image on a smartphone whilst he sat in his back garden enjoying the sun with his wife Carole.
This is a 12" x 8" Watercolour on Bockingford Not paper and painted using Winsor & Newton & Daniel Smith Colours.
" High and Dry "
This Watercolour depicts a scene that I chance emcountered on a family day out along the Northumberland Coastline which ended at Seahouses Harbour in 2012. As I sat with fish and chips in hand, I captured some great photographs around the small harbour, knowing that I would attempt a painting of this scene once I got home. This craft was actually out of the water, and sitting atop the harbour wall awaiting repairs, service, and a new coat of paint.
This was painted using W&N Artist Watercolours on The Langton Paper Block 16" x 11"
" Transporter Bridge "
Painted in 2015 this Watercolour depicts a late evening sunset over the river Tees. The Transporter Bridge is in almost silhouette as the sun reflects across the river on this very still evening.
This was painted on request for a family friend who was working in Abu Dhabi and was feeling homesick!
This was painted using St. Petersberg White Night Watercolours on W&N Artists Paper size A3
" Jacqueline's Sunflowers "
This was painted in 2014, not my usual kind of subjects. It was painted rather in a hurry, hence the loose wash style. It was in fact for my sister-in-laws Birthday present! Happy Birthday Jacqueline!
It is a 16" x 12 " Painting on W&N Artists Paper using Winsor & Newton, and Daniel Smith Tube Colours.
" Richard's Boat Ride "
This one is one of my early works, it is called " Richard's Boat Ride " and was produced from observations of a close friends Holiday Photographs. I am not sure of the exact location of this picture I think it may be Kuşadası in Turkey.
Many thanks to Richard Gray for the inspiration, this Watercolour was created especially for him as a memento of his holidays in 2012
Painted using W&N Artist Watercolours on W&N Cotman Paper size 16 x 12 Inches.
" Looking Down River "
One of my favourite views, The River Tyne and it's fabulous Bridges!
This was my first serious Watercolour, and indeed my first commission work done for a family friend.
It is called " Looking Down River " and depicts Newcastle Quayside bathed in sunny light in early Summertime. The view of the most iconic bridges as seen from The Quayside Pub.
It is a large sheet Watercolour measuring 30 x 22 Inches and painted using W&N Watercolours and Daniel Smith Colours on Daler Rowney Half-Sheet Langton 300gms Paper.

Painted using W&N Cotman Watercolours on 16 x 12 Inch W&N Cotman Watercolour Paper 300gsm Cold Pressed
This painting was one of my first A3 size Watercolours. It turned out reasonably close to the effect I was trying to portray, and the kind comments and likes I received on Social Networking have spurned me on to produce many more since!
" Paint Set "
My very first Professional Watercolour Set!
This Paint Box includes pans of paint that originate from the early 1960's and were originally owned by my Dad! I converted a Winsor & Newton Cotman Painting Plus box to hold all of the Original Full Pan Watercolours, and added some new colours of my own to the twelve original pans.
This painting was worked from a photograph of the items shown, and was painted using the set depicted in this image! They are W&N Watercolours on W&N Artists Paper 16 x 12 Inches.
" The Bridges "
The Bridges depicts a view from the High level Bridge that straddles The River Tyne.
I produced this Watercolour from a photograph reference that I acquired on a lovely summers day walk along the parapet of the nearby bridge. looking down river you first see The Swing Bridge, then The Newcastle Tyne Bridge, and in the distance you just catch a glimpse of the newest crossing of the river in the white sihouette of The Millenium Bridge.
Painted uising W&N Watercolours on Bockingford Paper and an odd size of 16 x 7 Inches completed in 2014
" All Aboard "
All Aboard depicts a scene from my local Open Air Museum at Beamish. I worked on this picture using photographs of a visit to the Museum in 2014. Hopefully this conveys the lovely sunny day that we enjoyed.

" Beamish "
Like the picture above, this scene came from the same visit to this magnificent Open Air Museum, this tram is depicted heading down the main street of the old town.
Once again Painted using St. Petersburg White Nights Watercolours on W&N Artist 300gsm Not Paper size 16 x 12 Inches Not quite as much detail in this Image as I was trying to work swiftly and loosely across the page.
" Cross House, In the Rain "
This was an early Watercolour painted in 2011. It depicts Cross House in Newcastle City Centre at the bottom of Westgate Road. It was a wet miserable day when I capturesd this scene on film, and as it was such an iconic building I went home and tried to replicate the scene on a small 9 x 7 Inch Watercolour Pad.
This was painted using my own mix of Payne's Grey using Indigo and Ultramarine as base colours.
" Central Arcade "
Again this is another Newcastle City Centre well known scene and haunto of buskers and Musicians. This scene depicts a busker plying his trade just across from the legendary Windows Music Store, as the public mingle around a display table in the background.
This was painted using Cotman Watercolours on a 9 x 7 Inch pre-stretched sketch paper ( Bannana Artpad )
" Heart 'o The Toon' "
Heart O' The Toon' or roughly translated to " Heart of the Town " is what I consider to be the heart of Newcastle City Centre.
Previously described as “the most beautiful street in England” with classical architecture designed in the 1830s by the internationally renowned Richard Grainger.Standing proud at the top of Grey Street is Grey's Monument, erected in 1838 to commemorate the Reform Act of 1832, drafted during Earl Grey's time as Prime Minister.
Painted using W&N Watercolours on Bockingford A3 Paper
