Oil Paintings
In 2015 I moved into the arena of Oil Paintings. This page is a Gallery of my oil Based Artworks. Alongside each picture is a short description including the size of the work, and the scene, and location that I am trying to depict. Most of my Watercolour's have been rendered by working from reference photographs which I have sourced from visiting the locations. These are by no means the complete collection of my works, but just a selection which I have found to be popular with my friends and family on social media sites.
" Sunny Midgeholme "
This is the fourth rendition I have produced depicting this magical place. But this time it is re-created using Oil Paint as a medium.
It is a 16 x 16 inch Canvas, and mostly painted from my vivid memory of a visit to this small hamlet in 2014.
This was also my very first Oil Painting, I started work on this canvas in December 2014 and it took me over 2 Months to complete, I would have preferred to have let it dry once more and rework the foreground, but having got used to working with acrylics, I became a little impatient... and thus this is the final composition, varnished and ready to display.
" Rock-Pooling
with Grandad "
This Oil painting is of a local Scene to beach-goers all over Tyneside. It depicts the beautiful landmark Lighthouse located on a small tidal Island just off the coast at Tynemouth. It is the unmistakable St. Mary's Lighthouse on what is called locally " Bait Island "
The island itself has a macabre history with murders and local naer-do gooders related to it. But it is always a thriving busy seaside resort at any time of the year due to it's magical beauty and being cut off from the mainland twice a day, it is not a bad spot to be marooned for a few hours! This scene depicts a small child with her Grandad off to search for crabs and starfish in the many abundant rock pools either side of the causeway!
" Starry Starry Night "
This Oil painting is an obvious copy of Van Gogh amazing rendition of the night sky in Arle, supposedly viewed from an asylum window. I asked my wife what she wanted for her birthday, and as a great fan of his artwork she asked for this.

Unfortunately they would not sell me the original, and therefore I had to make my own. This is a tad larger than the original. it proved a challenging project due to having to make oversized brush strokes to imitate Vincent's deft touch.

This was completed in Oils and is 40 x 30 Inches in Size. Shame I was unable to sign this one... made me wonder how many times over the years has this painting been copied literally.

" Early Shift "
This Oil painting is of a local Scene to people who live and belong to my adopted home town of Washington, Tyne & Wear. Painted in the definitive style of Pitman Painter " Norman Cornish " this scene depicts the old slag heap at Albany Washington, The " F Pit " and the old Brickworks, that adorned the town in it's infancy.

This is one of my larger paintings and was done as a commission for a family member who loved Norman's style and depictions of the old Industrial North
" Durham Cathedral "
This Oil painting is depicting a very well known scene to visitors of The north east. It is in fact the picturesque river Wear, and in the foreground is the old pumping House, and higher up on the hill is Durham Cathedral itself.

This is a new format of painting for me. I am using Moisture Resistant MDF Board which is treated prior to an under painting of Acrylics. Then, once fully dry, I add to the painting with a full coat of Oil Paints. It is a new process adopted by myself, to speed up and enhance the oil Painting process, which normally takes weeks to months until dry.
Now my paintings will be ready to varnish in under a month when used with Liquin Mediums.

This is a 16 x 12 Inch rendition of the Scene
" Whitby Sunset "
This Oil painting was just a small study that I started in-between working on larger pieces. It depicts the ruins of the Abbey up on the hilltop at Whitby. The sun is low in the sky, the street and house lights are shining in the distance, and a few gulls fly overhead past the Abbey. the reflection is here all the year round as the nearby pond is very rarely dry.

This is a small 12 x 10 inch reproduction. worked from a photograph I took from this position a few years ago, the sky was added from my imagination, although I have visited here many times in my youth and witnessed such colourful ends to warm Summer days.
" Sunset Redcar Beach "
This Oil painting was just another small study that I started in-between working on larger pieces. It depicts the beach at Redacr with the famous Hartlepool Steel Works in the distance.

This is a small 12 x 10 inch reproduction. worked from a photograph I took a few months ago whilst on a trip with a friend to the nearby Paddy's Hole Harbour. And I just could not resist this small evocative painting from the view of the beach that we visited just before we left.
" St Mary's Island "
This Oil painting was just another small study that I started in-between working on larger pieces. It was completed at the same time as the one above. Completed on an MDF Moisture Resistant Panel.
I fully intended to work a dramatic sky into this one, however, my wife ( My biggest art critic ) told me to stop at this stage before I ruined it? who am I to argue?

This again is a small 12 x 10 inch reproduction. The scene is at Whitley Bay on the North East Coast of Northumberland. A most pleasant spot, be careful if you visit not to get caught on the causeway by the tide!
" Durham Cathedral from Pelaw Woods "
This Oil painting I started many, many years ago..... it lay abandoned in the back of my studio. As I was encouraged to work with acrylics, and found them much easier.... this was forgotten about. Here it is finally finished after several years laying dormant.
Sadly this view of the cathedral at Durham can no longer be seen from Pelaw Hill, due to a landslide several years ago. I am entrusted to hear that they are replanting the woods and maybe some day again this view will be available. This was worked from an old photograph and my memory of the site.

It is an 40cm x 40cm rendition in Oil of this once iconic scene.
