Acrylic Paintings

This page is a Gallery of my Acrylic Artworks. Alongside each picture is a short description andthe size of the work, and the scene, and location that I am trying to depict. Most of my Acrylic's have been rendered by working from reference photographs which I have sourced from visiting the locations. I have used several brands of Acrylic Mediums to create these artworks, but have generally favoured The Galeria, Fevicryl, and System 3 Paints. These are by no means the complete collection of my works, but just a selection which I have found to be popular with my friends and family on social media sites.

Acrylic Painting View from Tyne Bridge Newcastle
" Glass Tops and Chimney Pots "

This is one of my latest acrylic painting completed in February 2015

It is a 16 x 16 inch square Canvas.

Like most of my Canvas Paintings, I have also rendered the edges of the work, in order that they can be displayed without using frames.

This scene was painted from a photograph I took way back in 2012 whilst traversing across Newcastle's famous Tyne Bridge. I am sure I could have spent a further two or three days working over this subject, but I decided that I enjoyed the feel of the loosely painted Chimney pots in the foreground.

Acrylic Painting Side Street Newcastle Upon Tyne
" Gannin' Hame "

This is another Acrylic painting completed in February 2015 It is a 16 x 16 inch Canvas

This scene depicts an early Sunday morning, Newcastle City Centre, the late night revellers are still wandering around the silent streets. The Sun is bursting overhead as a new dawn begins, and the City prepares for the return to the hustle and bustle of normal daytime. This scene was rendered by working from a photograph I took of " The Side " a popular street in Newcastle, looking towards the quayside and The River tyne.

High Level Bridge Acrylic Painting
" High Level "

This was the first Acrylic Painting I completed in January 2015. It is a 16 x 16 Inch Canvas painting using various acrylic mediums.

This scene depicts the High level Bridge as it straddles The River Tyne.

Once more I worked from a photograph that I had taken in 2013. The photoshoot was part of a day out I spent capturing the many bridges that cross The Tyne. I was looking for a good vantage point for a comission work that I had undertaken. the end result being I captured enough good images to also keep myself busy over the Winter Months.

Midgeholme Cumbria
" Sunny Midgeholme "

This was my very first Acrylic Painting. I completed it in January 2015. It was a commissdion piece for a close famly friend. It is a 16 x 16 Inch Canvas painting using various acrylic mediums.

This scene depicts a small Cumbrian Hamlet of Midgeholme.

Once more I worked from a photograph that I had taken in 2014. The photo shoot was part of a day out I spent capturing many photographs of the old School House in the distance. What a magical place this is! Although it was wet and windy on the day of my visit along with my wife, we both agreed we would have to come back to this idylic unspoilt rural location for some very lovely walks in the near future. I hope I done it justice.

Swing Bridge
" Swing Bridge "

Completed in March 2015, this acrylic canvas called " Swing Bridge " has been painted on a 16 x 16 Inch Canvas. I worked from a photograph reference from a very sunny days outing in June 2012. I was amazed to find the Swing Bridge and adjoining streets desolate mid afternoon, I could not help but feel sorry for the people who were at work in nearby office buildings.

My feet wee hot as I pounded the streets, but I knew I was collecting some rare photos of Newcastle in all it's glory as the sun shined. I promised myself to paint this scene at a later date, and here it is!

Swing Bridge
" Grainger Market "

Completed in March 2015, this acrylic canvas called " Grainger Market " has been painted on a 16 x 16 Inch Canvas. I worked from a photograph reference from a Saturday Afternoon's visit to Newcastle's Old Grainger Market. The place was buzzing with people as I stopped by Olivers Bistro Cafe, and then made my way down the asiles to purchase some of Pumphrey's Freshly Ground Coffee, looking at this image reminds me of the unique aroma's of the marketplace!.

This was  amore complicated subject than I had imagined when I had started, and I had to use an indelible pen to mark the floorspace after two atempts to make the floorspace fir the surroundings. All in all though I was pleasewd with the end result, especially as I regard my character portraiture paintings as a little untidy.

Swing Bridge
" The Old Pumphouse "

This 16 Inch Square Acrylic Painting is a depiction of The Old Pumphouse and in the background Durham Cathedral up on the hill.

This was painted from a photograph I took from across the River Wear one sunny afternoon whilst I sat with my wife and enjoyed the sound of the river splashing across the Weir, we sat and admired the view as the cloudless skies afforded a beautiful glow to all of the stonework that was facing us.

I must admit I took a bit of liberty with the trees, and added some larger and smaller ones as I deemed necessary to complete this scene.

Warnscale Bothy 16 x 12 Acrylic_Smallest
" Warnscale Bothy "

This 16 Inch by 12 Inch Acrylic Painting is a depiction of Warnscale Bothy located in the English Lakes District Cumbria. The Bothy is a free house and can be used by any campers or walkers as an overnight stop. It is located at the head of Buttermere, and I have vivid memories of visiting here in my youth. The early morning mists swirling up the valley and the beautiful surrounding hills cannot be replicated in paint. But I have tried my best to represent this idyllic location.

This was my first completed project of 2019, a year by which I fully intend to publish as many new works as possible.

Beeston Lock 35 x 25cm Small.jpg
" Beeston Lock "

This 35 x 25 cm Acrylic Painting is a depiction of Beeston Lock located Nottinghamshire.

This was a free commissioned painting for a very close friend, and as such was a great adventure for me, as it was my first time painting onto a Canvas Art Board. It was such a great ground to be used as it was not as flexible as a normal canvas, and allowed me to easily add a lot of detail where required and keep relatively straight lines where needed.

This was my second completed project of 2019, a year by which I fully intend to publish as many new works as possible.

Bradgate_Park.jpg
" Bradgate Park "

This is Bradgate Park in Leicestershire. Painted onto a Canvas Art Board in Acrylics
measuring 18 x 14 Inches

This was done as a commission for a close friend whom I know Steve Dexter, who lives very near by to this iconic scene and Park.

Not true to scale by any means, I enlarged the distant follies and monument to encapsulate the three iconic features within the park.

Ashness Bridge.jpg
" Ashness Bridge "

This artwork, is trying very hard to represent  Ashness Bridge located in The English Lakes District, not far down the road from Keswick.

It is another Art Canvas Board 30 x 25cm

Painted using Acrylics

I tried very hard to replicate the gloomy feel of a wet and windy day in the Lakes District. Working from one of my won photographs of this one of my favourite haunts on a day trip to the area. It always looks memorable, no matter the weather!

Lindisfarne_Castle.jpg
" Holy Island "

.. again working from a photograph from a visit to the location, this 10 x 12 Inch rendition of the unmistakable image of Lindisfarne Castle located here in Northumbria, North east England.

This piece was worked using acrylics, and although I was not happy with the start of this picture ( namely the sky ) I continued and eventually created this rather loose style impression of the scene.

Penshaw_Poppies_Small.jpg
" Penshaw Poppies "

This painting depicts a very local and un-mistakable landmark in the town where I live.

It is an early morning scene, and the poppy fields are a wonder to behold at the right time of year.

This piece was worked using acrylics, and once again, although I was not happy with the start of this picture ( namely the sky ) I continued and eventually created this rather loose style impression of the scene. ( please see my Facebook page for the huge alterations made during the creation of this artwork )

Craster_Small.jpg
" Craster "

This painting depicts the beautiful Northumberland Coastline Harbour of Craster. This is the place to go if you want to smell, and purchase fresh kippers on the coastline on your day trip to Dunstanburgh Castle.

Again this is a Canvas Art Board rendition measuring 12 x 10 inches.

I used Acrylic Paints, and Acrylic Markers for the fine detail such as the railings on the main boat. I worked from one of my own photographs of the scene, and yes, the sky was this deep blue on the day, such a memorable occasion I just had to paint this one!

High_Bridge_Street_Acrylic.jpg
" High Bridge Street "

Back to my favourite size again with this one, it is a 12 x 16 Inch rendition of my favourite City. Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Here we have High Bridge Street. One of the oldest parts of the town, and it includes a lovely cobbled stone road, and some beautiful architecture, and pubs along it's length.

I painted this one on request of a close friend, after him repeatedly asking me for the watercolour I had painted earlier, I decided to make a more permanent rendition, here in acrylics.

Lone_Tree_Glencoyne_Small.jpg
" The Lone Tree, Glencoyne "

One of my favourite images to paint thus far this year, was of " The Lone tree in Glencoyne. "

This was painted from an image of a very dear internet friend who I met online. His name is Chris Sale, and you should really check out his Facebook Page, and associated Blogs and You Tube Channel for all things Lake District.

The original Image I worked from was one of Chris's amazing photographs of the scene depicted here. I was privileged to be given the opportunity to recreate it here in acrylics. It measures 16 x 9 Inches and now resides at Chris's Home In the Lakes District.

Royal_Mile_Small.jpg
" The Royal Mile "

This painting depicts " The Royal Mile " in Edinburgh. Working from a photograph that I had taken during The Edinburgh Fringe Festival a few years ago. I copied the artwork that I had produced using Photoshop.

I am an ardent photographer, and do like to edit my own photographs. I was very surprised at the amount of interest this one image created as an acrylic 12 x 10 inches painting derived. I have in fact had to reproduce the scene several times thus far, on canvas and like here, on Canvas Art Board.

I do hope that all of my future works in 2019 generate just as much interest!

_1260154_Edit_Small.jpg
" Cormoran, Staithes "

This painting depicts " The Cormoran, Staithes "

I recently took a trip to North Yorkshire hunting for subjects and material to paint. How amazed was I to find the tide out, and this beautiful craft just laying there lazily in the sunshine. I padded across the watery harbour floor with my camera and took lost of reference photographs.

I was also able to photograph and reproduce the image of the Polar bear Wicker Sculpture seen here on the Harbour wall at the time.

This has got to be one of my favourite paintings thus far, and Imagine my incredulity when asked to sell the finished item less than 1 week later to the owner of this amazing craft!

Prints will still become available in the near future though.

Donwell Chippy_Edit.jpg
" Donwell Chippy "

This painting depicts " Donwell Chippy "

It is a local haunt to where I live, in fact... one of the best chippy's in the area!!

I decided to try out a new style of painting here. I grabbed a shot of the scene on my mobile phone, went home made several surreal sketches of the location....  and tried to make a dull representation of the scene. Unfortunately I failed, and yet everybody viewing this picture loved it!

It is now hanging in the chip shop itself, having been purchased by the owner, for all and sundry to view as they purchase their fish and chips suppers !!!

Dunston_Staithes.jpg
" Dunston Staithes "

This painting depicts " Dunston Staithes "

It is quite local haunt to where I live, in fact just a few miles down the road on the Banks of the River Tyne. I was very lucky one evening to be able to witness the sun going down in the distance and to see the Massive Wood Structure lit from behind. It is an original fixture from the days when coal was king and here boats pulled alongside to the Staithes, trains ran along the top of the wooden structure to deposit the coal into the Colliers below.

Recently refurbished it is now a local landmark and well worth a visit if you are anytime near the town of Low Dunston.

This is a 24 x 18 rendition of the scene, I really enjoyed using the bright colours and making this into a silhouette!

Washington_F-Pit.jpg
" Washington F-Pit "

This painting depicts " Washington F-Pit "

This is a local scene, or rather I should say was local scene in the 1960's - 1970's in my adopted home town of Washington Tyne & Wear.

The Winding house still stands and is a memorial to the days of coal in the town, but none of the outbuildings displayed here remain. Well worth a visit if you are interested in North east Coal and Mining History though!

This is a 16 x 12 rendition of the scene, I was trying out a Norman Cornish type colour palette on this one.
